The Andreas School of Business is a 2021 winner of a community engagement award at 糖心传媒.
The school 鈥渉as placed exemplary emphasis on collaborative service and social responsibility while pursuing its academic goals,鈥� Provost Dr. John D. Murray declared. 鈥淎s a result, a highly effective and fulfilling learning model has flourished鈥攐ne that requires prioritizing decisions that benefit society while minimizing negative impacts on the environment by adopting philosophies and practices that are socially just and sustainable.鈥�
Provost Murray presented the award in the Engaged Department category to the school for achievements in advancing the community engagement goals of the university, educating students for civic and social responsibility, and improving community life.聽
The School of Business does not have departments within its structure. Therefore, the entire school was presented with a Community Engagement Award, which was accepted by Dr. Manuel Tejeda, interim dean.聽
VITA, SMIF, B.E. Lab, WIN. These acronyms are synonymous with the school, which 鈥渉as raised the bar for what it means to be innovative and impactful in academic offerings, student鈥揻aculty relationships, and engagement with the broader community,鈥� Provost Murray pointed out. 鈥淔aculty and students alike take pride in the service-learning projects embedded in an accounting, a finance, and a marketing course.鈥澛�
Presenting the award virtually on April 7, the provost continued: 鈥淐ommunity members receive tax-filing assistance each year, free of charge, through VITA鈥攖he Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Students at William H. Turner Technical Arts High School develop skills in financial literacy, thanks to members of SMIF鈥攖he Student Managed Investment Fund.鈥�
Dr. Murray indicated that the B.E. (Barry Entrepreneurship) Lab and WIN (We Inspire Now) have become part of the success story of the School of Business.聽
鈥淲ith more than a decade of developing strong ties and building deep relationships with the community, this academic unit has demonstrated genuine community engagement,鈥� the provost noted. 鈥淚ts faculty, staff, and students value, promote, and employ socially responsible practices that strengthen local communities.鈥�
The Center for Community Service Initiatives hosted the eighth annual Community Engagement Awards. Speaking during the ceremony, 糖心传媒 President Dr. Mike Allen and Campus Compact President Dr. Andrew Seligsohn congratulated all award winners.
